Greňová, Martina: Female translators as stakeholders in the contact between the Czech and German languages in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century Abstract (in English): The purpose of this thesis in the field of history of translation is to describe the role of women in the Czech lands in the translation process from German to the Czech language. We focus on the period between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. During this period, among other things, the status of women changed as well as the relationship between the Czech and German speaking population. When defining the new relationship between the two groups, translating into the Czech language played a crucial constitutive role. Our main research question is, whether and how women participated in this cultural process, and whether their involvement could eventually result in a professional career as a translator. Apart from that, there are also many other questions to be answered in relation to the historical context which had a major impact on the status and activities of women. For historical reconstruction of the period we apply the method of quantitative analysis of extant translations and directories. André Lefevere and his Manipulation School

This theoretical and historiographical thesis examines the theoretical work of the Translation Studies scholar André Lefevere. It focuses primarily on the analysis of Lefevere's work in the context of the development of Translation Studies (particularly in connection with the development of Descriptive Translation Studies, the formation of the "Manipulation School" and the cultural and sociological turns in Translation Studies). The paper covers Lefevere's theoretical underpinnings, the gradual development of his theoretical model and his contribution to the development of the discipline, with special regard to the integration of sociocultural aspects into translation research. Also included is an overview of the most significant critical responses to Lefevere's work and of the applications of his model in practical research.

French Drama in Czech Translation after 1989

The Master's thesis provides an analytic overview of translated dramatic texts from French to Czech after 1989. It focuses on the proportional representation of contemporary plays as well as on translators' work. The first part of the thesis gives a brief idea of contemporary French dramatic art and points out different expectations of French theatre spectators and readers in comparaison with the Czech ones. Subsequently, the specificity of drama translation and the role of translator in drama translation process is clarified according to existing theories. The main part focuses on analysis of list of the Czech translations created between 1990 and 2015 that are available to the public. As expected, drama publishing shows marginal and decreasing tendency and the majority of published authors are represented by classics. In general, contemporary texts prevail among theatre agency translations, most of which are represented by comedy plays. However individual efforts and projects help to broaden the image of French contemporary drama. Individual interviews with translators and publishers enrich the analysis with experience from professional practice.
